It has been stated that Melih Gökçek, who underwent major surgery in 2024 after it was discovered that five of his arteries were blocked, experienced a significant change in his spiritual world following the operation. According to what Gökçek shared with his inner circle, the former mayor expressed his desire to be laid to rest not in Istanbul, but in the cemetery located next to the historic Sheikh Ali Semerkandi Tomb in the Çamlıdere district of Ankara.

It was also learned that after the surgery, Gökçek shared his will by saying, "When I die, bury me in the cemetery where the Sheikh Ali Semerkandi tomb is located." Furthermore, it is noted that the spiritual atmosphere of the tomb and its surroundings played a major role in this preference reflected in his will.

Pointing to the Sufi concept of "dying before dying," Gökçek also gave a spiritual message with the phrase "A good intention leads to a good outcome" found at the entrance of the tomb. On the other hand, this request by Gökçek has led to various interpretations in the public eye.

It is reported that the will made by Gökçek, who served as the Mayor of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality for many years, following his health problems, has been met with respect, particularly by his loved ones and family.
