Minister Göktaş calls on producers: Let us not trample on social values for the sake of ratings
Speaking at the "Fourth Media Meeting Consultation Meeting," Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş addressed TV series and film producers. Stating that the impact of issues sometimes described as "an ordinary scene" on society is much different, Göktaş said, "Let us not trample on social values for the sake of ratings."
The "Fourth Media Meeting Consultation Meeting," organized by the Ministry of Family and Social Services, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), was held in Istanbul.
Nearly 40 people, including TV series and film producers and academics, attended the meeting, which was also attended by Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş and RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin and was closed to the press.
According to information obtained, the meeting, where the parties expressed their demands to each other and which lasted over three hours, was productive.
Stating that a large number of series are on air at the same time, the producers said, "There is great competition and concerns about ratings. We want our situation to be understood as well."
Reporting that many companies are in a difficult period due to rising costs, industry representatives shared the view, “Nearly half of our budgets go to taxes. Facilitations in this regard will contribute to the sector and increase quality.”
Stating that while some productions are criticized, good productions should also be applauded, the producers brought the proposal of rewarding TV series and films to the table.
"CAN EVERYONE IN A SERIES BE AN INTRIGUER?"
It was noted that Minister of Family and Social Services Göktaş described TV series and films as an important element of cultural diplomacy and "soft power" in her speech.
Emphasizing that they are not on a different side from the producers, it was stated that Minister Göktaş used the expressions, "We are never against each other. We are stakeholders, a family; there is no 'you-us'. We are addressing the public together. TV series and films are an important tool in conveying many messages."
It was pointed out that Göktaş, stating that a balance could be found on this issue with good intentions, conveyed that they are ready to provide all kinds of support to all producers who act with a sense of social responsibility.
“FOR THE SAKE OF RATINGS…”
Calling on producers by saying, "Let us not trample on social values for the sake of ratings," Göktaş emphasized that the impact of issues sometimes described as "an ordinary scene" on society is much different.
It was reported that Minister Göktaş also stated that she would convey the producers' demands regarding taxes to the relevant Ministries.
At the meeting where producers took the floor one by one to express their views, upon an industry representative saying, "We need bad characters in series. Only then can we tell the story of the good characters," Minister Göktaş criticized some series and replied, "Can everyone in a series be bad or an intriguer?"
