Minister Işıkhan announces: 'Unemployment is at its lowest level in 11 years'

Minister Işıkhan announces: 'Unemployment is at its lowest level in 11 years'

The unemployment rate in Turkey fell by 0.1 percentage points in April compared to the previous month, reaching 8.5 percent. On the other hand, the number of unemployed in the broad definition reached a historic peak of 10.7 million. It has increased by 1 million 631 thousand in the last year.

Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan said regarding the 'decline' in the unemployment rate, "In line with our Medium-Term Program (OVP) and 12th Development Plan, we will continue to prioritize policies that ensure economic stability and the lasting welfare of our citizens, and we will continue to take steps that prioritize employment in the coming period."

Sharing on his social media account, Minister Işıkhan stated the following:

"Our economy continues to generate employment. Our unemployment rate is at its lowest level in the last 11 years.

The unemployment rate, which has been in single digits for the last 12 months, stood at 8.5 percent with a decrease of 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous month.

The number of unemployed decreased by 18 thousand people compared to the previous month and by 484 thousand people compared to the same month of the previous year. We continue to see the results of our employment-supporting policies better every day.

Our employment figure in April 2024 increased by 983 thousand compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 32 million 618 thousand people, and the employment rate increased by 1.1 percentage points to 49.5 percent.

We also see that young people and women are taking a larger share in our employment rates, which have reached historic peaks in recent periods. The employment rate for women increased by 1.2 percentage points compared to the same month of the previous year. The unemployment rate decreased by 2.9 percentage points compared to the same period.

In line with our OVP and 12th Development Plan, we will continue to prioritize policies that ensure economic stability and the lasting welfare of our citizens, and we will continue to take steps that prioritize employment in the coming period."
