Ministry issues marriage circular to 81 provinces: Wedding fees to change, inspections in the wedding sector to increase

Following the declaration of 2025 as the 'Year of the Family' by AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Ministry of Interior has issued a circular to all governorships. The circular includes measures to be taken to support the institution of marriage and plans for work to be carried out in cooperation with public institutions and non-governmental organizations.

PROPOSAL FOR REGULATION OF WEDDING FEES

According to the pro-government newspaper Türkiye Gazetesi, the circular contains an instruction to reduce the fees charged for marriage procedures to the lowest possible level. Additionally, it is planned to allow couples who are getting married to benefit from public social facilities and to provide convenience in the permit processes for weddings at the village and neighborhood level.

The circular aims to increase financial support applications for couples experiencing economic difficulties before or after marriage, particularly for low-income groups. In this context, it was reported that various institutions, primarily Social Assistance and Solidarity Foundations, will be involved in the process.

AWARENESS EFFORTS AGAINST LOCAL TRADITIONS

It was stated that information campaigns will be conducted to create social awareness regarding practices such as "bride price" (başlık parası) and "milk money" (süt parası), which create an economic burden during the marriage process in some regions. Evaluating that these practices create financial pressure on marriages, steps are being taken to reduce their effects.

PRICE INSPECTIONS TO BE TIGHTENED

It was noted that inspections will be tightened in order to keep price increases in goods and services during wedding seasons under control. With these measures, it is aimed to make wedding expenses more accessible.

ADDITIONAL MEASURES FOR POST-BIRTH

The circular also includes regulations for increasing in-kind and cash assistance provided to mothers who give birth in the post-marriage period, supporting projects related to child development, and ensuring that pregnant women can benefit from public services with priority.
