Ministry of National Defense announces: Air defense system arriving in Konya

As part of the defense modernization efforts carried out within NATO, an Italian SAMP/T Air Defense System has been deployed to the 3rd Main Jet Base Command in Konya. This step aims to strengthen the joint air defense of alliance countries. In the development shared during the Ministry of National Defense's (MSB) weekly press briefing, it was emphasized that such efforts will continue to increase the alliance's deterrence against regional threats.

The statement also pointed out that domestic and national air defense systems are being developed through Turkey's investments in its national defense industry. The Ministry of National Defense stated that the Siper Air Defense Missile System in the Air Force Command's inventory reached "Full Operational Capability" during a test conducted in Sinop on June 12. The Siper system successfully destroyed a "Super Şimşek" aerial target, which moves at high speed and possesses superior maneuverability.

It was stated that the Steel Dome project aims to increase Turkey's multi-layered air and missile defense capacity, strengthen national deterrence, and protect national security at the highest level. All these efforts aim for a synergy in the field of defense, both inter-state and internationally.

Current developments in the Strait of Hormuz were also brought up at the weekly MSB briefing. Officials expressed that the de-escalation agreement reached between the US and Iran is welcomed, and that they are hopeful it will contribute to lasting peace and security. It was also emphasized that developments in the region are being closely monitored in terms of energy security and the continuity of maritime trade. Turkish authorities underscored their readiness to support initiatives to be carried out in these areas within the framework of international law.

TRAINING ACTIVITIES AND SUMMIT PREPARATIONS

The Ministry of National Defense's training and consultancy activities continue in cooperation with many countries within the scope of bilateral military agreements. Currently, a total of 503 military personnel from Kyrgyzstan, the TRNC, Mali, both sides of Libya, and Somalia are receiving training at the Mountain, Commando School and Training Center Command in Isparta. For the 2026-2027 planning, a training quota has been allocated for 448 people from 16 countries, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, and Hungary. Furthermore, this number is expected to increase throughout the year depending on additional requests from friendly and allied countries.

It was reported that preparations for the upcoming NATO Ankara Summit are also being meticulously carried out under the coordination of the Presidency. The Ministry's statement indicated that security measures have been taken and all work is continuing in cooperation with other relevant institutions. Within the scope of the summit, guest defense ministers and their delegations will come together at a reception to be held at the Ay-Yıldız Headquarters.
