Ministry of National Education issues statement regarding school attack in Kahramanmaraş

While Turkey is still discussing the armed attack on a high school in Şanlıurfa, a similar incident occurred today in Kahramanmaraş.

In the armed attack at Ayser Çalık Secondary School in the Onikişubat district of Kahramanmaraş, 3 students and one teacher lost their lives, while 20 people were injured.

Kahramanmaraş Governor Mükerrem Ünlüer shared the initial information regarding the attack, which was carried out by an 8th-grade student. Stating that the attacker's father was a former police officer, Ünlüer said, “He shot himself during the chaos. It is currently unknown whether it was a suicide attempt or if he shot himself during the confusion. We estimate that he took his former police officer father's weapons. He arrived with 5 guns and 7 magazines and entered 2 classrooms.”

Following the incident, judicial and administrative processes were launched immediately. Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek announced that an investigation into the attack has been opened; 3 deputy chief public prosecutors, 6 prosecutors, 4 civil chief inspectors, and 4 police chief inspectors have been assigned. A publication ban was also issued as part of the investigation. It was reported that Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi and Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin are also heading to the region.

The Ministry of National Education also announced that 4 ministry chief inspectors have been assigned to the incident.

The full statement from the Ministry of National Education is as follows:

"The heinous attack that took place today at noon at Ayser Çalık Secondary School in the Onikişubat district of Kahramanmaraş has deeply shaken and devastated our nation, especially our educational community.

According to initial information, an armed attack was carried out inside the school by a student of the aforementioned school.

From the very first moment of the incident, the process has been closely monitored by our Ministry, and all necessary interventions are being carried out in coordination with our relevant units.

Our Minister of National Education, Mr. Yusuf Tekin, and accompanying officials set out for the region as soon as they received news of the incident. Furthermore, four Ministry chief inspectors have been assigned and dispatched to our Kahramanmaraş province to investigate the incident in all its aspects.

We wish a speedy recovery to our injured who have been transferred to hospitals and are continuing their treatment, and we pray for God's mercy upon our teacher and students who lost their lives.

A detailed statement regarding the heinous incident will be shared with the public in the coming process.
