Naci Görür reacts to urban transformation law! 'Rent negotiations are being conducted under the pretext of earthquakes'

Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Naci Görür commented on the omnibus bill known as the urban transformation law, stating, "We said that a law must be enacted first to prepare a city for an earthquake. But I wish we hadn't. They passed a law recently, but they frightened the public. The transformation we are doing today involves rent negotiations. Earthquakes are being used as an excuse."

Naci Görür reacts to urban transformation law! 'Rent negotiations are being conducted under the pretext of earthquakes'

The 5th Istanbul Urban Symposium, organized by the Istanbul Provincial Coordination of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), concluded yesterday at the Harbiye Military Museum. Sessions on "Disaster Risks and Urban Policies" were held at the symposium, which was attended by experts.

"RENT NEGOTIATIONS ARE BEING CONDUCTED"

Speaking at the first session of the symposium, as reported by Cumhuriyet, founding member of the Science Academy and disaster scientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür expressed his grievances regarding the omnibus bill, which resonated in the public eye as the "urban transformation law," saying: "We also said that a law must be enacted first to prepare a city for an earthquake. But I wish we hadn't. They passed a law recently, but they frightened the public. There is a concern among citizens that 'Are they going to seize our property?' You cannot manage a city with such a law. To manage it, the public, local government, and the state must work hand in hand. Under these conditions, transformation cannot happen in Istanbul. We cannot prepare for an earthquake in an environment where the public is afraid, amidst the bickering between the municipality and the government. I do not believe that earthquake-focused urban transformation is being carried out. The transformation we are doing today involves rent negotiations. Earthquakes are being used as an excuse."
