Naci Görür shares striking post following Erdoğan's earthquake statement: 'I must say with regret...'

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Mehmet Özhaseki said in a statement last week, pointing to today, that he would announce preparation projects for a potential Istanbul earthquake.

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also announced the project in question at the 'Transformation of the Century Istanbul Program'.

Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made a statement on his social media account regarding the “Transformation of the Century Istanbul” project.

“I MUST SAY WITH REGRET…”

Stating that the project is useful but insufficient, Görür used the following expressions:

"Today, our government officials and our President launched the ‘Transformation of the Century, Istanbul’ initiative. Our President said very correct things at this meeting that gave us hope.

He stated that earthquakes are the primary agenda and problem of this country, that we must not forget about earthquakes, and that if we do, we could face disasters like the August 17 and February 6 events at any moment.

He emphasized urban transformation in Istanbul and the need to transform a large number of independent units. All of these are very good, useful things, but I must say with regret that they are not things that will fully prepare Istanbul for an earthquake.”

“LET US NOT PRESENT PREPARING ISTANBUL FOR AN EARTHQUAKE AS IF IT WERE MERELY A BUILDING ISSUE”

Addressing government officials and offering recommendations, Görür said:

"A city becoming earthquake-resilient means it can withstand a predicted earthquake or earthquakes with minimum damage and loss of life. For this, the city must be prepared for an earthquake not just with its building stock, but with all its components. In other words, the city's management approach, its people, infrastructure, building stock, ecosystem/environment, and economy must be earthquake-ready. The best example of this is the Southeast, which experienced the February 6 earthquakes.

In these places where every component of the cities was destroyed, could normal life exist even if the building stock were resilient? Perhaps the loss of life would have been lower, but the degraded ecosystem could still have wiped us out. Therefore, I request from government officials: Let us not present preparing Istanbul for an earthquake as if it were merely a building issue. Let us never do things that will increase the building stock and population, and most importantly, let us dilute the industry and move it to Anatolia."
