Naci Görür speaks out following the earthquake in Tokat

The 5.5-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Niksar district of Tokat in the morning hours caused anxiety among the local population. Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, in a statement made via social media, underlined that a new major earthquake is not expected. However, he warned that aftershocks smaller than magnitude 5 could continue.

Prof. Dr. Görür stated, "A 5.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in Niksar-Erbaa/Tokat. There are no casualties. A major earthquake had occurred there in 1942. Therefore, I do not expect a larger one. It is a place where faults branch out in parallel. A small branch of these may have broken. A larger earthquake will not occur. Aftershocks smaller than 5.0 may occur. Stay away from damaged areas."

Stating that the Niksar district of Tokat and its surroundings have historically been a region with high seismic activity, Görür emphasized that the probability of a new tremor of similar magnitude in the region following the major earthquake in 1942 is low.
