Naci Görür warns, 'Let's not fool ourselves!' 'If this breaks, it will produce at least a 7.2 magnitude earthquake'

Following the 6.2 magnitude tremor that occurred off the coast of Silivri in Istanbul, geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made significant assessments during a live broadcast on Habertürk TV.

"WE ARE THE ONES WHO CALLED ATTENTION TO THE MARMARA IN 1999"

Recalling the 1999 Gölcük Earthquake and drawing attention to the fault line in the Sea of Marmara, Görür expressed the danger in the region with the following sentences:

"We are the ones who called attention to the Marmara in 1999. When the 1999 earthquake occurred, we said that the bottom of the Marmara was loaded. The energy released in the Marmara loaded the Marmara. The 1912 Şarköy earthquake loaded the bottom of the Marmara. On one side is Şarköy, on the other is Kocaeli. The Marmara is in the middle of both, there is an earthquake. The absolute gap will certainly be filled. We can say this easily.

"THE MARMARA MUST BREAK"

The Marmara must break. Let's not deceive ourselves. I don't want people to die. We have to tell the scientific truths. If there is a counter-opinion, let them bring the data and put it in front of me. It must have passed through high-level international journals for me to take my hat off to it. That is not how one expresses an opinion on a scientific matter. It has international standards."

"A TREMOR OF AT LEAST 7.2 MAGNITUDE WILL BE INEVITABLE"

Detailing the fault branches located in the Marmara, Görür explained what consequences a possible rupture could lead to as follows:

"The northern branch of the Marmara, the northern branch of the North Anatolian Fault, is 160 kilometers long. One is the 65-kilometer Adalar fault passing south of the Princes' Islands. If this breaks, it will produce an earthquake in the magnitude of 6.

The Kumburgaz branch is 75 kilometers long. It extends from Yeşilköy to off the coast of Silivri. If this breaks, it will produce at least a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. If the Adalar branch and this branch combine, then an earthquake of 7.5 is expected. We said the Tekirdağ fault has broken. Submarines imaged it, took videos. The fracture looks very fresh.

It looks like an area that has just broken. If it had broken in 1776, it would have been covered over and deformed to a certain extent. We said this broke in the 1912 Şarköy earthquake."
