National athlete causes fight at school: Intervened in bullying against his sister

In an incident that took place in the Selçuklu district of Konya, a dispute escalated into a fight after national weightlifter S.B.K. (20) claimed that his younger sister, I.K., was being bullied at school due to her weight. The incident occurred on February 3 at Adnan Hadiye Sürmegöz Middle School in the Feritpaşa neighborhood.

S.B.K., who is reported to have become a European weightlifting champion at the age of 17 a short time ago, encountered students E.B.I. and her twin sister at the school. According to the allegations, S.B.K.'s sister, I.K., told her family that her classmate E.B.I. had targeted her by mocking her weight. Following this, S.B.K., who went to the school with I.K.'s mother, encountered E.B.I. in the hallway during a meeting held in the office of the school principal, R.Ş.

The ensuing argument grew, resulting in S.B.K. punching and kicking E.B.I. As the duty teacher noticed the situation and attempted to intervene in the fight, E.B.I.'s twin sister also became involved. During the moments that followed, S.B.K. also punched this student. The incident ended when teachers intervened.

Following the violence at the educational institution, police teams were dispatched to the school upon notification. National weightlifter S.B.K. was taken into custody but was released after giving his statement.

School Principal R.Ş. described the incident in his statement to the police as follows:

“On the day of the incident, my student's mother came to the principal's office. She said that her daughter was being subjected to bullying by E.B.I. due to her weight. I stated that the matter should be evaluated by the guidance counselor and the vice principal. At that moment, I noticed a noise in the hallway and saw the teacher trying to break up the fight. I said to S.B.K., who caused the incident, ‘I spoke with your mother; what you are doing is wrong. It is not right to come to the school without notifying anyone and use violence against children. What would happen if everyone did this?’”

While the events have brought security concerns in schools back to the agenda, there are calls for measures to be taken to prevent similar incidents from recurring in educational environments.
