NATO Summit in world press: 'Unconventional' commentary on Erdoğan-Trump meeting

The main sessions at the leadership level will be held today at the NATO Summit organized in Ankara. On the second day of the summit, heads of state and government will hold negotiations on four critical topics. In diplomatic circles, it is assessed that the stance and messages of US President Donald Trump could be decisive in the course of the meetings.

ERDOĞAN-TRUMP MEETING WAS THE FOCUS OF THE FIRST DAY

The summit opened with the Defense Industry Forum, attended by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Various sessions, including one featuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, were held as part of the program.

US President Donald Trump, who arrived in Ankara, began his official program with a bilateral meeting with AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Following the meeting, Trump gave positive messages regarding the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, stating that a decision on this matter could be taken soon.

In the evening, the leaders attending the summit and their spouses came together at the NATO Leaders' Dinner.

The NATO Summit and the Erdoğan-Trump meeting found wide resonance in the international media. Many media outlets evaluated the contact between the two figures from different perspectives.

US-based Fox News highlighted President Erdoğan's warm and sincere welcome of Donald Trump, commenting that the close images between the two were remarkable.

CNN International focused on the defense industry topic in its reports. The channel reported that Trump said a decision would be made soon regarding the sale of F-35s to Turkey.

CNN also included Trump's messages that sanctions imposed on Turkey due to the Russian-made air defense system could be lifted.

DIPLOMACY EMPHASIS FROM EUROPEAN MEDIA

While NBC News reported that Trump continued his criticisms of NATO, the German television channel Welt broadcast the meeting between Erdoğan and Trump live.

In Welt's assessment, attention was drawn to the role President Erdoğan has assumed in international diplomacy. It was stated that Turkey is one of the countries capable of maintaining contact with both Ukraine and Russia, highlighting Ankara's diplomatic balancing policy.

TRUMP'S NATO MESSAGES STOOD OUT

Qatar-based Al Jazeera brought Trump's statements regarding regional crises to the forefront. The report drew attention to the US President's remarks that Turkey knows the Iranian administration well and is an important actor in the management of regional crises.

UK-based The Guardian wrote that Trump continued his remarks on Greenland at the NATO Summit as well. The newspaper also recalled Trump's words, "NATO has disappointed me," during his assessments regarding an Iran war.

US-based Politico also reported that European allies thought Trump came to the summit with the goal of reaching new compromises, but that the US President created new question marks regarding his commitment to NATO.
