New 'blind fish' species discovered in China
A fish species with non-functional eyes has been discovered in a karst cave in Guiyang, the capital of China's Guizhou province.
Chinese researchers have discovered a new species of 'blind fish'.
The Chinese researchers conducting the study determined that some individuals of the fish species named "Sinocyclocheilus guiyang" have no eyes at all, while others have non-functional or skin-covered eyes.
The researchers emphasized that the population of this species is under threat due to human factors and increasing environmental pollution.
Like other members of the genus, "Sinocyclocheilus guiyang" has been included among the protected species.
This extremely rare species was observed only once in 2024, and has been seen a total of only 25 times to date.
The research was published in the journal "Zoosystematics and Evolution".
