New constitution statement from AKP Group Chairman Abdullah Güler

Following the March 31 Local Elections, the AKP is preparing to begin work on a new constitution.

In a statement regarding the new constitution negotiations and the work to be carried out, AKP Group Chairman Abdullah Güler argued that Turkey is in need of a new constitution.

'PATCHWORK' ANALOGY

Stating that various steps had been taken on this issue in the past but no results were achieved, Güler noted that the constitution has turned into a "patchwork" due to the amendments made to date.

Güler said, "The current Constitution is far from meeting today's expectations. A civil, pluralist, and democratic constitution is essential."

Reminding that Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş has also made various statements on this issue, Güler conveyed that certain contacts and meetings will be held regarding the constitution.

Güler stated the following:

"Following the visits our Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş will make to political parties, we will also begin our own meetings with political parties. In these meetings, we will aim to determine the path and method. The constitution is a text of social consensus. For this reason, a center could be established to receive the opinions of all segments of society, universities, non-governmental organizations, and the business world. We are considering proposing this as well. After the proposals reached are evaluated by legislative experts and turned into headings, we can then negotiate these proposals with the parties."
