New development in the lawsuit filed by Erdoğan: 'Forced appearance order for Canan Kaftancıoğlu'

The first hearing of the lawsuit filed against former CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu, due to her response to a post by AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan, has been held. The court issued a forced appearance order for Kaftancıoğlu, who was stated to be out of the city, and adjourned the hearing to September 15.

The first hearing of the case filed against former CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was held at the Istanbul 53rd Criminal Court of First Instance. The indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office requests a prison sentence for Kaftancıoğlu ranging from 1 year and 2 months to 4 years and 8 months.

''ERDOĞAN'S REQUEST TO INTERVENE WAS ACCEPTED''

In the first session of the case, the court panel accepted the request of President Erdoğan's lawyer to join the case based on the "possibility of being harmed by the crime."

Kaftancıoğlu's lawyer stated that his client was out of the city on the date of the hearing and that they would have her present in court for the next session. However, despite this defense, the court ruled to issue a forced appearance order for Kaftancıoğlu and adjourned the hearing to September 15.

''WHAT HAD HAPPENED''

The crisis between the two figures that was carried to the judiciary began on April 30, 2025, with the following harsh statement made by President Erdoğan from his social media account:

"There is no party, no group, no identity for theft, corruption, bribery, fraud, or immorality. Whether in Istanbul or elsewhere, if there is a 'Deli Dumrul' order in place, no one can expect the judiciary to turn a blind eye to it... It is our duty to ensure that whoever is acting like a bandit, whoever is reaching for the public treasury, and whoever is extorting money from others is held accountable, regardless of their identity."

Former CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu, who had previously been issued a political ban, quoted this post by Erdoğan and responded as follows:

"It is also our duty... The days when those who reach for the public treasury will be tried are near."

Following this post, within the scope of the investigation launched on charges of "insulting the President," Kaftancıoğlu gave a statement at the Istanbul Police Department Security Branch on October 23, and the lawsuit filed subsequently has gained a new dimension as of today with the forced appearance order.
