New development in unhealthy food disclosures: Cheeses with natamycin on the market!

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry continues its disclosures of unhealthy foods, which it began in October.

In the updated list, the component natamycin—which is used in eye drops and known for its effectiveness against fungal infections—was most recently detected in products sold via social media as 'tulum cheese'

PREVENTS CHEESE FROM MOLDING

This substance, which is effective against eye fungus, also helps cheeses maintain an appearance of freshness for a long time. Experts advise against consuming suspicious food products and remind the public that they can file complaints regarding such products by calling the ALO 174 hotline.

WHAT IS NATAMYCIN?

Natamycin is an antifungal substance widely used in the food industry, particularly in milk and dairy products.

In the list of products subject to imitation and adulteration published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, it is stated that products containing this substance may endanger health.

The substance can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, such as skin rashes, swelling, and itching. Long-term and high-dose consumption can lead to the disruption of intestinal flora, the development of complications in the digestive system, and stomach ailments.

Natamycin is a common antifungal used in milk and dairy products such as cheese and yogurt, as well as in delicatessen products. It prevents the growth of mold and yeast in the food it is used in. Thus, while the shelf life of the products is extended, the spoilage of food and the development of mold are also prevented.

The substance, which is also used in the pharmaceutical sector, can be included in medications as an effective method for treating certain fungal diseases in humans.
