A new era for motorcycle couriers: Licensing and inspection requirements are coming
Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya signaled a new regulation directly affecting motorcycle couriers during a live broadcast. Minister Yerlikaya stated, "Motorcycle couriers have become indispensable to e-commerce. Serious problems have been reported regarding this. Now, they will be registered within 2 months. Not just anyone will be able to become a motorcycle courier; they will have to obtain a license. We will begin inspections then."
Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya made striking statements regarding both security and traffic regulations during a live broadcast on Habertürk. His remarks, particularly concerning motorcycle couriers, directly affect tens of thousands of people working in the sector.
"BECOMING A MOTORCYCLE COURIER WILL NOT BE EASY"
Speaking about a new practice shared with the public for the first time during the broadcast, Yerlikaya announced that individuals who want to work as motorcycle couriers will no longer be able to do so without meeting certain requirements. Stating that there are serious problems in this field, Yerlikaya emphasized that the rules will be tightened.
"THERE ARE SERIOUS PROBLEMS REGARDING MOTORCYCLE COURIERS"
Minister Yerlikaya used the following expressions regarding the issue during the live broadcast:
"You will have a helmet, gloves, equipment clothing, and boots for the motorcycle. You will receive training for this job and will constantly refresh your training. Motorcycle couriers have become indispensable to e-commerce. Serious problems have been reported regarding this."
With these words, he gave the message that motorcycle courier services will now be made more systematic and security-oriented.
REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT COMING WITHIN 2 MONTHS
Sharing the details of the new system, Yerlikaya stated that motorcycle couriers will be officially registered within the next two months. He expressed that a period will begin where not just anyone who wants to can do this job.
He announced that this transition process will begin soon with the words, "Now, they will be registered within 2 months. Not just anyone will be able to become a motorcycle courier; they will have to obtain a license. We will begin inspections then."
INSPECTIONS AND PENALTIES HAVE INCREASED
Yerlikaya also drew attention to the increase in inspections regarding motorcycle use. Emphasizing that the increase in loss of life due to motorcycle accidents in recent years has reached alarming levels, the Minister said that there has been a serious increase in the number of deaths from 2019 to 2024.
"In 2019, there were 866 deaths, and in 2024, there were 1,484 deaths due to motorcycle use. We have increased motorcycle inspections by 114 percent and the penalty system by 101 percent. 1,584 deaths. The most important issue here is wearing a helmet."
With these statements, it was underlined that increasing awareness among motorcycle drivers is not just an individual but a social responsibility.
