New list released in food inspections: Equine meat detected in pita filling

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry continues to share the results of its nationwide food safety inspections with the public. The latest updated list reveals numerous companies engaging in practices that threaten consumer health. In a statement issued by the Ministry, the products and companies found to be non-compliant during inspections were announced to the public.

During this process, it was reported that imitation and adulteration were detected in various food products, including honey, olive oil, pita, kashar cheese, spices, desserts, butter, kebabs, meatballs, and sucuk (sausage). The updated list, dated April 16, was published on the Ministry's website at “guvenilirgida.tarimorman.gov.tr”.

The most striking incident on the list occurred in İzmir. During the inspections, it was determined that “equine meat”—specifically horse and donkey meat—was used in the pita filling prepared at a business named “Dönerci Ali'nin Yeri”. This finding sparked reactions from both the local community and the general public.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry pointed out that such practices seriously endanger consumer health. By publishing the non-compliant products under the headings “Foods Endangering Health” and “Imitated or Adulterated Foods,” the Ministry invited citizens to be more cautious in their shopping.

While necessary legal proceedings have been initiated against the identified companies, the Ministry emphasizes that similar inspections will continue without interruption. These efforts regarding food safety increase transparency in the sector while allowing consumers to be informed about businesses.

Experts state that such incidents encountered during inspections once again demonstrate the importance of the need for oversight and effective monitoring in the food sector. Authorities point out that citizens reporting suspicious situations will play a major role in ensuring access to safe food.
