New statement from AKP regarding the Erdoğan-Assad meeting

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made statements at a press conference held at the NATO Leaders' Summit in Washington, D.C., the capital of the USA, on July 12.

Speaking about the normalization steps in Turkey-Syria relations that have recently come to the fore, Erdoğan stated that he had instructed Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to improve relations with Syria.

ASSAD HAD GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT

Following Erdoğan's statements, a response came from Syrian President Assad, who gave the green light to the meeting and used the following expressions:

"As we have said many times, we look positively at any initiative to improve relations, and this is a natural thing. No one thinks about creating problems with their neighbors, but this does not mean that we should go outside the rules."

CLAIM THAT THE PLACE AND TIME HAVE BEEN DETERMINED

In a report published in Daily Sabah, known for its proximity to the government, it was claimed that Erdoğan and Assad would meet in Moscow in August.

A high-level official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied the report published in Daily Sabah, stating, "The reports that our President will hold a meeting with Syrian President Assad in Moscow do not reflect the truth."

WILL ERDOĞAN AND ASSAD MEET?

AKP Spokesperson Ömer Çelik made evaluations regarding the agenda after his party's Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting.

Touching upon the "Erdoğan-Assad meeting" issue, Çelik said, "Intelligence agencies are meeting at certain intervals. Once the file matured by the institutions reaches the political level, the framework to be created by the Foreign Ministers is presented to our President and the Syrian President. After that, a calendar is created. Whether this will happen through a meeting between the two states or through an intermediary country is also a matter that needs to mature."
