Indictment for 'newborn gang' accepted

The indictment prepared against the gang that generated illicit profits by referring babies to contracted hospitals in Istanbul and caused their deaths through negligent behavior has been accepted by the court.

WHAT IS THE NEWBORN GANG?

The criminal organization that turned neonatal intensive care units in Istanbul into commercial enterprises was first identified following an anonymous tip sent to the Presidential Communication Center (CİMER) on March 27, 2023.

Within the scope of the investigation conducted by the Financial Crimes Investigation Bureau in Istanbul, it was revealed that neonatal intensive care units of private hospitals in Istanbul were being operated irregularly and that illicit profits were being obtained from the Social Security Institution (SGK) through bribery and forgery.

In the summary of proceedings prepared by the Istanbul Provincial Police Department, the organization is accused in 5 separate categories:

Establishing an organization for the purpose of committing crimes, being a member of the organization, and conducting activities on behalf of the organization.

Committing intentional homicide through negligent behavior (referring to infant deaths).

Qualified fraud (illicit payments received through the SGK).

Forgery of official documents.

Bribery.

Furthermore, it was stated that in a separate investigation conducted into individuals who were revealed to have threatened Prosecutor Y.E. in his office in Büyükçekmece during the investigation phase of the file, and who threatened the prosecutor and his family with assassination, five of the eight people detained by the gendarmerie were arrested, and judicial control measures were imposed on the other three.

8,000 TL PER DAY

Depending on the contracts that the Ministry of Health and the SGK have with many private hospitals, a daily payment of 8,000 TL is made to intensive care units where newborns stay to reduce post-birth infant mortality.

It was revealed that the organization coordinated 19 private hospitals and many "112 Emergency" personnel to generate profit through "so-called treatment" applications within the scope of "intensive care treatment," for which the state makes payments calculated on a daily basis.

The police report states that newborn babies were kept in intensive care for long periods by misrepresenting their health status, thereby allowing high amounts of payments to be collected from the SGK.
