Many citizens were detained during the protests that began with the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. Istanbul Bar Association lawyer Halil Enes Kavak made horrific statements regarding the condition of the detained university students.
REVEALED THE TRUTH
Kavak stated that almost all of the detained youth arrived with signs of battery. "There is no one among them without signs of battery. Many have burst eyes and ears, and their bodies are covered in bruises," he said. Kavak stated that news of many young people detained for participating in the protests was only received after their families filed missing persons reports.
He stated that during meetings with the police regarding the detained youth, the officers did not have information about whom they had detained or why. Kavak stated, "Even this picture shows that the police do not know who they are detaining or why."-
What happened to the youth in custody is even more horrific. Kavak used the expressions, "In Saraçhane, the police beat the person they arrested while taking them into custody. There were even those who were detained simply because they did not run away from the police." Stating that "they collectively sprayed pepper gas at the defenseless youth while using profanities," Kavak emphasized that the scale of the violence was too great to be ignored.
'THEY DO NOT FIT IN THE DETENTION CELLS'
Stating that the number of young people taken to the police station was very high, Kavak pointed out that those detained did not fit into the detention cells at the Vatan Police Headquarters. "So many people were detained that the detention cells were packed to the brim. Most of the youth were being detained for the first time, and the police turned this situation into an ordeal. They were kept in cramped conditions for 4 days with the smell of pepper gas," he said.
