No meetings had taken place for 43 months: Öcalan's lawyers file request for a visit

MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli's high-profile statements have been followed by a move from Öcalan's lawyers.

Lawyers from the Asrın Law Office have filed an application with the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and the prison administration requesting a meeting with the leader of the PKK terrorist organization, Abdullah Öcalan.

In a statement made on the social media platform X regarding yesterday's meeting, the lawyers emphasized that family and lawyer visits for PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan must be provided regularly in accordance with the law.

The statement read as follows:

Our client, Mr. Abdullah Öcalan, held a meeting yesterday with his nephew, Mr. Ömer Öcalan, within the scope of a family visit.

This visit, which took place after 4 and a half years had passed since the last family meeting (March 3, 2020), should not be kept as a one-time and limited event like the previous ones; its continuity must be ensured.

Ensuring that Mr. Abdullah Öcalan, Mr. Hamili Yıldırım, Mr. Ömer Hayri Konar, and Mr. Veysi Aktaş have regular lawyer and family visits is a requirement of the constitution, the law, and international conventions.

Furthermore, holding regular meetings with Mr. Öcalan, who possesses the theoretical and practical power to move the process from a foundation of conflict and violence to a legal and political one, will pave the way for the resolution of political and social problems in Turkey and the region on the basis of dialogue, peace, and democratic consensus.

In this context, we reiterate the necessity of ending the rights violations systematically maintained in İmralı and ensuring the right to family visits and lawyer visits—which have not been permitted since August 7, 2019—in accordance with the law.
