No news from missing engineer Doğukan for 14 days: Search efforts halted
There has been no word for 14 days from Doğukan Demirtaş (29), an engineer serving on the cargo ship "Valentina 1" traveling from Indonesia to Singapore. While search efforts by the ship's crew and authorities have yielded no results, his family continues their anxious wait.
Mechanical engineer Doğukan Demirtaş began his duties as a 4th engineer on the "Valentina 1" ship on September 10, 2024. As the ship was traveling from Indonesia to Singapore, it was discovered on December 17 that Demirtaş had gone missing.
Although the crew searched every part of the ship in detail, Demirtaş could not be found.
SEARCH EFFORTS STALLED BY WEATHER CONDITIONS
The search efforts initiated by surrounding ships and coast guard teams in the Flores Island region off the coast of Indonesia for Demirtaş were halted after 7 days due to adverse weather conditions.
Stating that he last spoke to his son by phone on December 16 at 13:42, his father, Önder Demirtaş, requested help from the authorities.
Father Önder Demirtaş, who lives in the Menteşe district of Muğla and works as a taxi driver, described the events with these words:
"Doğukan started his job on September 10 with a 6-month contract. I last spoke to my son on December 16. He said he was fine. They set off from Indonesia on Sunday. On Wednesday afternoon, the company called me and said my son had gone missing. The ship's crew searched everywhere several times, but Doğukan could not be found on the ship. There were three cameras on the ship, and no footage of him was found on those either."
"WE ARE ASKING FOR HELP FROM EVERYONE"
Stating that the ship later returned to Indonesia via specific routes for search efforts and continued to Singapore after the searches proved fruitless, Demirtaş noted that they have been in contact with the consulates general in Singapore and Indonesia throughout the process.
Demirtaş said, "We are trying to get information through the company and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but there is no clear result. He was a child full of life; we are asking everyone for help to get information about his fate."
The Demirtaş family is demanding that search efforts be resumed and that a comprehensive investigation be conducted.
