1,556 buildings at risk of collapse have been identified in Istanbul.

In a statement made by the IBB, it was reported that the municipality has been conducting free rapid screening tests on buildings to determine the city's building stock and accelerate urban transformation.

The statement noted that teams visited addresses to conduct analyses and shared the results with the residents, adding: "160,000 requests have been received to have the IBB's rapid screening test performed. Teams working non-stop have analyzed 35,000 structures to date. The analyzed residences were classified into categories A and B (low risk), C (medium risk), D (high risk), and E (very high risk) according to their durability. The results of the building inspections showed that 50 percent of the analyzed residences fell into the D and E categories, meaning they are risky structures."

UNABLE TO CARRY THEIR OWN WEIGHT...

Regarding the test results, the statement said: "According to the analysis results, 1,556 buildings could not even be placed into categories A, B, C, D, or E. Of these 1,556 structures that are unable to even carry their own weight, 178 have been demolished to date. Furthermore, official proceedings have been initiated for 96 buildings. Property owners and district municipalities have been informed regarding 1,443 buildings."

32,780 APPLICATIONS TO THE 'ISTANBUL IS RENEWING' PLATFORM

Pointing out that if these buildings for which proceedings have begun are also demolished, 2,907 independent units will have been demolished, the statement said: "In this context, the evacuation process for over 10,000 people from risky buildings will have been completed. The IBB provides a monthly rental support of 7,000 liras to both the property owners and tenants of these buildings, by the decision of the IBB Assembly."

IBB Deputy Secretary General Gürkan Akgün, whose views were included in the statement, noted that approximately 200,000 structures are at risk of becoming unusable in a possible earthquake.

KİPTAŞ General Manager Ali Kurt said: "If the structure that collapsed in Küçükçekmece had entered a renewal process by reaching an agreement with the IBB or a contractor, they would have received an additional 7,000 liras in rental assistance on top of the rental assistance provided by the Ministry. Their building would have been renewed and this disaster would not have occurred. Our citizens are not aware of this."

Kurt stated that a total of 32,780 applications have been made to the 'Istanbul is Renewing' (İstanbul Yenileniyor) platform, of which IBB subsidiaries KİPTAŞ, İstanbul İmar A.Ş., and BİMTAŞ are stakeholders, adding: "These applications cover approximately 1,748,448 people in 39 districts, 531 neighborhoods, and 481,134 independent units (437,112 residences, 44,022 commercial units). There are 1,013 applications in the reconciliation process. These cover 96,396 people in 34 districts and 175 neighborhoods across 25,606 independent units (24,099 residences, 1,507 commercial units)."
