Numerous fire trucks dispatched to Metris Prison: Allegations that inmates set beds on fire

Activity observed at Metris Prison in Istanbul during the evening hours drew attention.

In the footage that became a trending topic on social media, a large number of fire trucks and ambulances were seen waiting in front of the prison.

It is alleged that inmates at the prison, where numerous fire crews were dispatched, started a riot around 22:00 due to poor conditions and set beds on fire.

Speaking to Halk TV, Adil Yaşam Association President Muhammed Haluk Çavuşoğlu stated that inmates at the prison are staying 50 to a ward designed for 10 people, and that even the prayer room has been converted into a ward.

Çavuşoğlu stated that families are anxious about the lives of their relatives held in the prison and are awaiting a statement from the Ministry of Justice.

Expressing that the food in the prison is also poor, Çavuşoğlu noted that the prison administration exerts great pressure on the inmates and that major fights occur over the slightest argument.

Çavuşoğlu pointed out that the activity observed could be an attempted riot arising from these reasons.

STATEMENT FROM THE DMM REGARDING THE ACTIVITY

Following the active moments in front of Metris Prison and the increasing allegations that there might have been an attempted riot, a statement came from the Center for Combating Disinformation (DMM).

The following statements were included in the announcement:

An inmate set their bed on fire; the flames were extinguished by personnel in a short time before turning into a fire, and the fire department was called as a precaution.

There is no fire situation at Metris Prison, and no inmates or personnel were affected by the incident.
