Once again Bahçelievler, once again a collapse risk

In Bahçelievler, Hürriyet Neighborhood, Birlik Street, some parts of the side wall of a 6-story building fell off for reasons yet unknown.

While residents evacuated the building on their own, police, municipal, and fire department teams were dispatched to the scene.

The street was closed to traffic, and the residents evacuated from the building were placed in a guesthouse by the municipality.

Teams from the Bahçelievler Municipality will take core samples from the building to conduct tests regarding its condition.

'CORE SAMPLES WILL BE TAKEN AND ANALYZED'

Bahçelievler Mayor Hakan Bahadır stated in his remarks, "There was an adjacent building arrangement here. One of these two adjacent apartment buildings is undergoing urban transformation. While it was being rebuilt, the building undergoing urban transformation was not completely demolished, and one or two walls remained. When bricks fell from there, our citizens notified us. We arrived with our municipal police and search and rescue teams. Although there was no major problem, we evacuated our citizens and are currently hosting them. Tomorrow, core samples will be taken and analyzed. Currently, based on preliminary information, there does not appear to be a problem."

'THE BUILDING IS 48 YEARS OLD, IT HAS COMPLETED ITS LIFESPAN'

Stating that progress on urban transformation needs to be faster, Bahadır said, "This building is 48 years old. Naturally, it has completed its lifespan. It is a 6-story building with shops underneath. I believe there is an illegal addition on top. Since the building was technically constructed before the 1999 earthquake, it is not considered a good building."

Police and municipal police teams continue to wait at the evacuated building to ensure no mishaps occur.
