Operation against 'black hat' hackers in Istanbul! Data of 20 million people stored
As part of an investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into a criminal organization allegedly led by a suspect identified as G.C.G., known in the IT world as a 'Black Hat Hacker,' 7 suspects, including G.C.G., have been detained.
In Istanbul, police teams carried out an operation targeting individuals identified as committing crimes by gaining unauthorized access to information systems. A large amount of digital material was seized during raids on the suspects' addresses.
Within the scope of the investigation, it was determined that the hacker group was led by a suspect named G.C.G. A total of 7 people were detained in the operation conducted under the coordination of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
MONEY TRANSFERS VIA "DORMANT ACCOUNTS"
It was determined that the suspects targeted accounts in foreign banks that had not been active for a long time, known as "dormant accounts." It was discovered that the group gained access to these accounts through cyber means and transferred the funds found in them to their own accounts.
DATA BELONGING TO MILLIONS OF PEOPLE SEIZED
Examinations revealed that the suspects had seized and stored personal data belonging to approximately 20 million people. It was also noted that user information for a large number of social media accounts had been accessed.
ALLEGATIONS OF INFILTRATING PUBLIC SYSTEMS
In a statement made by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that unauthorized access had also been gained to the databases of some public institutions. It was stated that the obtained personal data was offered for sale through a panel created by the group.
IDENTITY PHOTOS ALSO ARCHIVED
It was determined that the suspects also stored photos taken for security verification purposes, in which individuals appear alongside their identification documents.
While the examination of the digital materials seized during the operation continues, it was reported that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
