Operation against individuals who faked foreign currency inflows with forged documents

In the Çeşme district of İzmir, 6 people, including customs officers, have been arrested following an operation launched as part of an investigation into money laundering, based on assessments that large amounts of foreign currency were "introduced into the system by being falsely declared as having entered the country with forged documents."

In a statement issued by the Governor's Office, it was reported that an operation was conducted under the coordination of the Çeşme Chief Public Prosecutor's Office by teams from the İzmir Police Department's Financial Crimes Investigation Bureau, the Çeşme Financial Crimes Bureau, and the Çeşme Customs Enforcement, Smuggling, and Intelligence Regional Directorate, as part of an investigation into crimes including money laundering, abuse of office, forgery of official documents, bribery, unauthorized access to information systems, and violations of the Anti-Smuggling Law No. 5607.

The statement included the following remarks:

"It was assessed that 1 billion 142 million 510 thousand dollars, 18 million euros, and 6 million 950 thousand Danish kroner were introduced into the system by being falsely declared as having entered the country through irregular means and forged documents, and as part of the operation carried out on the morning of January 11 against the suspects identified during the investigation, 6 suspects, including 2 individuals who had irregular cash declarations filled out and 4 Customs Enforcement Directorate officers, were detained; all suspects referred to judicial authorities on January 15 were arrested."

The statement further noted that searches conducted at the suspects' homes and workplaces resulted in the seizure of one fake National Intelligence Organization (MİT) ID card, 4 one-dollar bills with different serial numbers, numerous pieces of jewelry, and digital materials.
