Operation against a network converting counterfeit dollars into TL at ATMs
In an operation conducted across 6 provinces centered in Istanbul, 9 suspects were detained for allegedly depositing counterfeit 50-dollar banknotes into bank ATMs, injecting a total of 102,750 dollars into the system and withdrawing Turkish lira in exchange.
Teams from the Istanbul Provincial Police Department's Cyber Crimes Branch identified a network that was circulating counterfeit dollars that were found to pass through ATMs and money counting machines.
Launching an investigation under the coordination of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the teams determined that the suspects were depositing counterfeit 50-dollar banknotes into ATMs belonging to various banks. Examinations revealed that a total of 102,750 dollars in counterfeit money was introduced into the system via ATMs and subsequently withdrawn as Turkish lira from the ATMs of different banks.
SECURITY CAMERAS GAVE THE SUSPECTS AWAY
Police teams examining security camera footage from the ATMs determined that the suspects used hats, glasses, and masks to conceal their identities. As a result of the work carried out, the identities of the suspects were established.
This morning, simultaneous operations were conducted at addresses identified in Istanbul, as well as in Artvin, Bursa, Edirne, Samsun, and Diyarbakır. During the operations, 9 suspects were apprehended and taken into custody.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
The detained suspects were taken to the police station for processing. It was learned that the investigation and legal proceedings regarding the operation are ongoing.
