Osman Bektaş issues earthquake warning for that city: 'An earthquake greater than 7 could occur'

Following the discovery of a 95-kilometer-long active fault line in Bursa that was not previously on maps, experts continue to issue warnings regarding the earthquake risk. According to a joint study by Ankara, Kocaeli, and Eskişehir Technical universities, the fault between Kayapa and Yenişehir could produce an earthquake greater than 7.

Geological Engineer Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş issued new warnings for Bursa. Sharing on his X account, Bektaş stated that based on historical earthquakes, Bursa could experience an earthquake greater than 7.

Bektaş noted the following in his post:

“According to the Istanbul-Bursa earthquake pair model, Bursa is next! Istanbul and Bursa have produced earthquake pairs greater than M7 (1509-1556) and (1855-1894) on the North and South branches of the North Anatolian Fault, respectively (Ambraseys, 2000). Such earthquake pairs on parallel fault branches can only be explained by the time-dependent (approximately 40 years) mutual viscoelastic stress transfer of parallel faults at depth. According to the earthquake pair model, after the 1999 7.6 - 7.2 Izmit-Düzce earthquakes on the North branch, the earthquake risk for Bursa on the South branch is increasing.”

Bektaş responded to a user's question as follows:

“According to historical earthquakes, Bursa could experience an earthquake greater than 7.”
