Özgür Özel announces his condition for participating in the opening commission
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, regarding the new commission planned to be established in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), stated, "We are the party that proposed the commission idea, and we view the commission favorably," while outlining his conditions for participation.
Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel visited the Journalists' Association yesterday with a delegation from his party. Responding to questions from members of the press during the visit, Özel made important assessments regarding the commission planned to be established in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) for new steps to be taken in the process of the terrorist organization PKK laying down its arms.
According to 24 Saat Gazetesi, in response to a question about CHP's participation in this commission, Özel stated, "We are the party that proposed the commission idea, and we view the commission favorably." However, he also emphasized that certain conditions must be met for participation.
"THE INFORMATION RECEIVED IS POSITIVE"
The CHP leader expressed his suggestions regarding the structure of the commission as follows: "Our proposal is two-fold; political parties with groups should be represented in equal numbers and there should be a decision-making majority, or a qualified majority should be ensured. If there is no qualified majority, we will not say 'yes'."
Stating that the information reaching them is promising, Özel said, "The information we received is that there will be a qualified majority. However, this needs to be officially communicated to us."
"WE HAVE SENSITIVITIES REGARDING THE NAME"
Emphasizing that they are also meticulous about the name of the commission and the concepts used, Özel said, "We have sensitivities regarding the name. It should be a common name that satisfies everyone. One of the names of the commission should also be 'democracy'."
Assessing when the commission might begin its work, Özel stated that the process could start in August, but could also spill over into the winter months due to certain conditions. Making a critical assessment at this point, the CHP leader said, "There are some things that are contrary to the spirit of this work. The expression that best summarizes the situation is this: There cannot be democracy in Diyarbakır and autocracy in Istanbul."
