Özgür Özel: New constitution debate cannot overshadow poverty

As the AKP government brings the issue of a New Constitution back to the agenda, the first contact regarding the matter has occurred, with Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş meeting with CHP Chairman Özgür Özel.

Following the meeting, both sides made brief press statements, and Özgür Özel's remarks became a trending topic on social media.

In his statement, Özel, who said that the AKP does not comply with the current constitution, used the following expressions:

We are a party that emerged from the March 31 elections as the leading party in Turkey, and we are aware of our responsibilities; politics cannot be indifferent to the public's agenda. Today, while people have high-level expectations regarding poverty, hunger, insecurity, and unemployment, we need to weigh where the expectation for a new constitution stands among the demands of society...

Although I am the chairman of the party, I do not consider it appropriate for the party's internal democratic understanding to give an answer without evaluating this issue in the party's authorized bodies. We will evaluate today's meeting, but I would like to state this;

I also expressed this to the Speaker: if we are proposing something new, for example, let's buy a new suit, let's buy it if we are going to wear it; if we are going to comply with the constitution, let's change it, let's make the best one, and then not fail to comply with it again...

Last time, a good one was made, but that constitution is not being complied with! While talking about a new constitution, it is our right to expect full compliance with the current constitution; we have conveyed our sensitivities on this issue. Constitution debates have happened before; if these debates settle like a fog over politics and make other issues invisible, it cannot be in the interest of the citizens.

If we are talking about the constitution while the main problem is people becoming impoverished, we would have failed to receive the message of the citizens.
