Özgür Özel responds to 'commission' criticisms while visiting families of martyrs and veterans
CHP leader Özgür Özel, who visited the families of martyrs and veterans, responded to criticisms regarding the decision to participate in the reconciliation commission in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) by saying, "The CHP is taking part in that commission to ensure that no secret bargaining is conducted away from the nation, that nothing is hidden from anyone, that the families of martyrs and veterans are not saddened, and to ensure that the field is not left to those who only think of their own interests."
Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel met with representatives of associations for veterans and families of martyrs.
In his speech there, Özel spoke about the commission established in the TBMM as part of the new reconciliation process called 'Turkey Without Terrorism.' Responding to criticisms regarding the decision to participate in the commission, Özel said, "We are there to ensure no secret bargaining takes place."
CHP leader Özel said, "Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is the founder of this party and this country. He says, 'It is a national duty to exalt the memories of our veterans and martyrs who wrote golden pages in Turkish history and to express our gratitude and appreciation to them.' I am the latest chairman of the party, and this is the testament of the first chairman. It is not possible for us to go beyond this. Protecting you and being with you is a national duty for us."
Speaking about the commission, Özel continued as follows:
"We have submitted 18 legislative proposals. A process cannot be carried out without eliminating concerns regarding the commission. The CHP is taking part in that commission to ensure that no secret bargaining is conducted away from the nation, that nothing is hidden from anyone, that the families of martyrs and veterans are not saddened, and to ensure that the field is not left to those who only think of their own interests. It is very important that you are represented in that commission. Martyrs and veterans should be represented in the commission; we will bring this proposal forward.
There are legislative proposals in Parliament to solve the problems of our police and soldiers. There will be some legal regulations for the transition to a Turkey without terrorism. On one hand, we hear things like the reintegration into society of those who have not fired a single bullet from their weapons, or some going to foreign countries. While steps are being taken for such regulations, the expectations of those who have fought for years and given their lives so that the flag would not be lowered cannot wait in the commission."
