Özgür Özel reacts to AKP's Leyla Şahin Usta: 'Shame on those who keep this woman in office!'

Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel made statements regarding the agenda at his party's parliamentary group meeting.

Highlights from Özel's speech:

In a moment, we will hold a group meeting that is almost exclusively dedicated to retirees, where we will discuss the entire issue comprehensively and at length, along with our proposed solutions. However, on the other hand, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) is also holding group meetings, using technological resources, and while the country's President comes here to act as the chairman of a party, there is a language that slanders and insults a party like the CHP, turning back on its own actions and blaming the CHP. I told Mr. Erdoğan: If you hear what you do not deserve, you will hear what you do deserve...

When it is done to Erdoğan, seeking support from abroad is considered legitimate; when we call it a coup when it is done to Ekrem İmamoğlu, they say we are complaining about Turkey to the world. I told my sister parties in Europe that what is happening in Turkey is a judicial coup. I told them to explain this correctly in your countries and invite Erdoğan to democracy. I also explained it to China's newspaper with a circulation of 8 million. It is a coup carried out in Turkey, and we will not surrender to it.

"WE WILL NOT SURRENDER TO THIS COUP"

And yesterday, Ömer Çelik appeared on television; you expect a correction on behalf of the party, and he is spinning nonsensical words. We are putting water dispensers in schools in Kasımpaşa so that while the rich child drinks water to their heart's content, the poor child in Kasımpaşa does not have to put their mouth to the tap in the school toilet. "HE FORGOT THE WORD RETIREE, HE DOES NOT MENTION IT"

As the child of two retirees, as the chairman of the party that was created by your labor, the party where not a single penny has passed through the throat of its chairman other than the salary a civil servant receives, the salary a retiree receives, and the medicine bills paid by the state through the contract made with the Social Security Institution, and every penny that passed through the throat of his child was the labor of this state, I say: Your struggle for dignity is the dignity of us all! We will fight for you to the end.

"THEY DID IT BY PLANNING"

Everyone in this hall knows that if the AKP had not come, if it had not interfered with the retiree, if it had not been the enemy of the retiree, if it had not been the owner of the shame that retirees are elements that decrease rather than contribute to the national income, today we would be receiving at least 42,000 liras, which is 1.5 times the minimum wage we do not like.

The lowest retiree salary that this country ended in the triple coalition period, which the late Ecevit, the late Mesut Yılmaz, and Mr. Devlet Bahçeli did not like and criticized at every opportunity, was 1.5 times the minimum wage. Today, 42,000 liras is the amount that today's minimum wage earner should be receiving. We, as the Republican People's Party, are working on these in every aspect.

"THE GOLD CALCULATION IN ANATOLIA NEVER FAILS"

I say it, he gets angry. He says, "He has gone out and is touring Anatolia, going from jeweler to jeweler, doing gold calculations." He says, "Leave that calculation." He says, "Account for this." Why should I leave that calculation? Every calculation fails in Anatolia, the gold calculation never fails. You can explain as much as you want. Explain as much as you want. "THE RETIREE'S LOSS IS 6 QUARTER GOLD COINS PER MONTH"

With the lowest retiree salary that the coalition they criticize over and over again, having come to power after the economic crisis of that coalition period, ended, 8 quarter gold coins could be bought. 8 quarter gold coins. Today, the retiree salary they give, they offer, does not buy 2 quarter gold coins. It does not buy 2 quarter gold coins. So the retiree's loss is 6 quarter gold coins per month. It's not a joke. If a retiree today, if a retiree went and bought a quarter gold coin from a jeweler, and looked when they got home and it wasn't in their pocket, they would lose their mind, searching along the way, wondering where they dropped it. Isn't that so? But today, it's not one retiree, it's every retiree. Not one quarter gold coin, but 6 quarter gold coins. Not once, but every month they lose. Retirees should not mind, and all of Turkey should know this; if something is lost, it is found where it was lost. Since we lost 6 quarter gold coins every month in a ballot box, we will go and find it in the first ballot box!

"THOSE RECEIVING THE LOWEST RETIREE SALARY HAVE REACHED 5 MILLION PEOPLE"

Let me give another example of how misery grows. Just in July, this year in July, according to the state's official figures, the number of those receiving the lowest retiree salary was 3.7 million. Now it is 4.9 million. That is, in 6 months, 1.2 million more people were added to the category of those receiving the lowest retiree salary. Those receiving the lowest retiree salary have reached 5 million people.

We worked for both the minimum wage and retiree salaries based on such misery, and we made our proposal. We said that the minimum wage should be 39,000 liras, and the retiree salary should be one minimum wage. The lowest retiree salary should also be 39,000 liras. We worked, we prepared the source. We prepared the incentive package. We said that while giving a raise to the minimum wage, we must protect small tradesmen and certain sectors. We prepared the 10,000 lira, 5,000 lira, 4,000 lira SGK premium supports, we took them and showed them. They said we cannot do this.

"THEY HAVE BEEN THERE DAY AND NIGHT FOR 6 DAYS"

For the first time in history, the minimum wage was announced below the hunger threshold. On the day it was announced, the hunger threshold was 30,000 liras, it was announced as 28,000 liras. The retiree salary was also announced as 18,938 liras with the inflation difference. We couldn't believe it, we said such a thing cannot be. We evaluated it with our deputy group chairmen. I said, what are they doing? They are not doing anything. What are they discussing? They are discussing the Traffic Law. Will you not intervene? They said we are here, but the AKP will close and leave in a little while. We talked, our group, all together, unanimously, with great determination, decided to fight for the retirees, to draw attention to Parliament, and to keep watch in Parliament for the retirees. They have been there day and night for 6 days.

They put it on Turkey's agenda. The AKP, with indigestion, does not stop insulting our deputies. Actually, they cannot stand the fact that this issue is being brought to the agenda, discussed, and reported, that is, the oppression they are inflicting on you is being seen and heard more; they are having indigestion. Whether they burst or explode, we will continue to stand behind the retiree.

"BAHÇELİ CALLED THE WAGE GIVEN TO RETIREES A 'WAGE OF MISERY'"

Here is an important development, and for the retirees, for Turkish democracy, and for the reputation of Parliament; unfortunately, this freak system called the Presidential Government System put a palace between the nation and the state. If everyone stands behind their word in the Planning and Budget Committee and in the Parliament General Assembly, the arithmetic to eliminate this wage of misery is clear.

"MANY THINGS WILL CHANGE IN TURKEY"

We think differently on other issues. We will argue again. Everyone can be with whoever they want in their own alliance. But if we are together on the retiree's issue, many things will change in Turkey, many things will change!

"THEY WILL SAY THERE IS NO MONEY FOR THE RETIREE'S 650 BILLION LIRAS"

By the way, the money, the source needed to make the lowest retiree salary one minimum wage for a retiree; 650 billion liras. 650 billion liras. The budget passed here the other day. They say we don't have such money, there is no source... There is an item in the budget; 768 billion liras. 768 billion liras. Do you know what its name is? Waived tax revenues. That is, they call it 'Tax Expenditure' in technical terms. Waived corporate tax. That is, they earned, they made a profit, they will pay tax; they put 768 billion in resources here so that they don't pay that tax, but now they will say there is no money, no source for the retiree's 650 billion liras.

"THEY WILL WORK UNTIL MORNING BUT THE RETIREE'S PROBLEM WILL BE SOLVED"

They are paying 2.7 trillion liras in interest. More than four times the money needed. Now they will come and say "there is none" when it comes to the retiree. We, as the Republican People's Party, will oppose this oppression imposed on the retiree to the end. The Planning and Budget Committee will sit, it will work. If necessary, there is the authority to transfer between items in the budget, if it saves, it will be found from there. If it doesn't save, an additional budget will be made. They will work until morning, but the retiree's problem will be solved.

"DO NOT EVEN GREET THOSE WHO DO NOT WORK FOR YOU ON THE STREET, LET ALONE VOTE FOR THEM"

If no contribution is made to the solution of this problem, if they resist this, if they speak differently from the group podiums and behave differently when it comes to voting; then the retirees will appreciate this too. Do not even greet those who do not see you, who do not hear you, who do not work for you on the street, let alone vote for them.

"THEY WOULD BE SAD IF IT RAINED AND MANSUR YAVAŞ'S DAMS FILLED UP"

You are in Ankara. This city has a Metropolitan Mayor. I will give the example from there. There are very similar practices in all our municipalities, but one of the best is Ankara. In Ankara, Mayor Mansur... You know, they have been dealing with water politics for days, water politics... I said in Denizli, I said: "They have gone out and are praying for it not to rain." There were those who believed, friends, there were those who believed. That is, there were those who believed this: "How do you know?" We know from what they do. They would be sad if it rained and Mayor Mansur's dams filled up. They would dance with joy if Ankara were left without water.

It is such a thing that, before this, in 2019, Erdoğan himself, in 2023, his Minister -one the first stage, one the second stage- said, "We built the Gerede system, we solved Ankara's water problem until 2050." Until 2050! I am their liar. They are at the head of the State Hydraulic Works, they manage it. And "Ankara's water problem is solved, give the water." Let Mansur Yavaş distribute it. Mansur Yavaş has taken all kinds of precautions in this regard.

While 235 million cubic meters of water came from the Gerede system in 2023, 119 million cubic meters in 2024, and 72 million cubic meters in 2025. And from May last year to this October, not 1 cubic meter of water came. 1 cubic meter! Now I turn around; if I say, "Oh Erdoğan, what happened to the Gerede system? Incompetent Erdoğan," by God, it would offend God. Why? While it is not raining, while there is a global drought, while the job of building dams in Turkey is the government's, while they have been in power for 23 years and have come to this state, while we still don't say anything about the drought and say let's all work together to solve the water problem; he turns around and says to Mansur Yavaş, "Incompetent, he left Ankara without water, etc.," and engages in water politics.

"WE WILL SOLVE IT IN POWER NEXT YEAR WITH THE AUTHORITY GIVEN BY THE NATION"

Mansur Yavaş took his precautions, he shared the figures with transparency. He also solved that problem. With God's permission, just as we solve every problem, we will solve the water problem in power next year, with the municipalities under the authority of the municipalities, with the authority given by the nation.

Now look at the issue between this Mansur Yavaş and these retirees. Mansur Yavaş, you know the AKP says "I will make 19 thousand 20, I will give a thousand liras"... They will make the whole parliament work, they will find a solution, they will give a thousand liras like giving pocket money to a child. Mansur Yavaş adds 2,677 liras to the salaries of poor retirees who should receive social assistance in Ankara every month from the municipality. He puts this money every month, 2,677 liras. He provides 1 kilogram of meat support 12 times a year. He pays their natural gas bills for 3 months in winter. He gives an additional 2,500 liras each during Ramadan and Eid al-Adha.

"THE PERSON RECEIVING SOCIAL ASSISTANCE WILL BE ABLE TO USE FREE TRANSPORTATION WITHIN ANKARA METROPOLITAN BORDERS FROM NOW ON"

While doing these, they are standing over him with hundreds of inspectors. Today, Mr. Mansur said: "Announce this, let our Chairman announce this." We also have a majority in Parliament next week, there is no possibility of us not passing it. The Ankara Metropolitan Municipal Council will make a decision; 375 thousand people receiving social assistance will be able to use free transportation within the Ankara Metropolitan borders from now on. "THEY QUIETLY REDUCED THE STATE CONTRIBUTION TO 20 PERCENT"

While we are giving this struggle with the limited means of the municipalities that are being shaken -I will talk about other examples in a moment-; we are facing a government that destroys what it did in the past with the power it has and breaks its promise. The government that is miserable to its retirees today has now hooked the retirees of tomorrow. You know, they had introduced the Private Pension System (BES), they had said we will encourage it. They had said we are increasing the state contribution to 30 percent to spread BES to the base. They quietly reduced the state contribution to 20 percent. The nation believed them and entered BES. They said "30 percent state contribution," now they reduced it to 20 percent. In this way, with a 10 percent reduction, they are trying to create resources for the jobs they need themselves from somewhere.

"THESE ANXIETIES ARE ALSO THE MOST CRUEL BIRTH CONTROL METHOD THAT REDUCES THE FERTILITY RATE THE MOST IN TURKEY"

But people have gone far beyond the point of saying "If I study, I will find a job, if I work, I will earn enough for my family, from now on I will take care of my family somehow." Mr. Erdoğan used to say "Have 3 children, have 5 children." Currently, the fertility rate in Turkey has fallen below 1.5. This is a huge threat. However, there is one reason; that is poverty. That is the anxiety about the future. That is "How can I have a child with this minimum wage, or even how can I get married? I got married, I had a child, how can I raise them, how can I feed them?"
