Özgür Özel's first reaction to the İmamoğlu investigation: 'It shows they are afraid'
CHP leader Özgür Özel has reacted to the 'fake diploma' investigation launched against Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. Stating that 'the government is afraid of İmamoğlu,' Özel reiterated his call for early elections.
Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel spoke about the 'fake diploma' investigation launched against İmamoğlu. Responding to journalists' questions in Erzincan, he called for early elections. Criticizing the investigation opened into İmamoğlu, Özel expressed his belief that the CHP would win the elections.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on allegations of 'forgery of official documents.' The prosecutor's office announced that at the beginning of December 2024, it had sent a writ to the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) to examine the validity of İmamoğlu's diploma. The investigation was initiated following claims by Veryansın Tv Editor-in-Chief Erdem Atay that İmamoğlu's diploma was fake.
Özel made the following remarks regarding the investigation:
''This shows how much they fear İmamoğlu. But the six arrows will win, the CHP will win, and Turkey will win.''
Emphasizing that the investigation is politically motivated, Özel stated that such attempts against İmamoğlu reflect a fear of the CHP's success.
HOW DID THE FAKE DIPLOMA ALLEGATIONS START?
Atay claimed that İmamoğlu had studied in Cyprus and that it was impossible for him to have transferred to Istanbul University in 1987. Following these allegations, the IMM announced that İmamoğlu graduated from the Istanbul University Faculty of Business Administration and that his diploma is recorded in both municipal and university archives.
The IMM's verification account also responded to the allegations by sharing a photocopy of İmamoğlu's undergraduate diploma.
