Palestine calls on world nations to 'force Israel to declare a ceasefire in Gaza'

Palestinian Presidential Spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh stated in a written statement that they welcomed the "call for an immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce in Gaza" resolution adopted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

Abu Rudeineh said, "The fact that 120 countries approved the draft resolution shows that the world is against these attacks, the displacement of the Palestinian people, and a new Nakba (Great Catastrophe)."

Abu Rudeineh noted that most countries support the Palestinian leadership's position on "establishing a lasting peace through the end of the Israeli occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital."

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in its statement, called on "world nations to abide by the decision taken at the UN and force Israel to fulfill its obligations under international law and to end its attacks and massacres."

The statement demanded that all necessary measures be taken and sanctions be applied to hold Israel accountable if it fails to comply with the resolution.

The draft resolution, introduced by Jordan and co-sponsored by nearly 50 countries including Turkey, was voted on yesterday at the 193-member UN General Assembly's Emergency Special Session on Palestine.

The resolution was adopted with 120 votes in favor, 45 "abstentions," and 14 "against" votes.
