Pensioner solidarity in Kadıköy: A call for a life worthy of human dignity

A large number of pensioners gathered at Kadıköy Rıhtım Square, filling the area to draw attention to economic difficulties.

Hasan Karagöz read the press statement prepared on behalf of the All Pensioners Union. Karagöz emphasized the importance of democracy, secularism, and a social state governed by the rule of law for the protection of fundamental rights and social welfare.

Stating that "a democratic, secular, and social state governed by the rule of law is essential for a humane life," Karagöz once again expressed the necessity for pensioners to act together.

PARTICIPANTS ADDRESSED THE GOVERNMENT

Arguing that a blow has been dealt to democracy in the country, Karagöz criticized the removal of many mayors from office, particularly in Hakkari and Istanbul. He stated, "Many local administrators from Hakkari to Istanbul have been removed from office, and the electoral will of the people has been usurped. The judiciary has become completely politicized. Such a governance is not sustainable. Democracy is currently suspended."

"WE WILL NOT BOW TO MISERY"

Touching upon the income level of pensioners, Karagöz noted that the average pension is at the level of 23,500 liras, while widow, orphan, and disability pensions start in the 5-6 thousand lira band. He renewed his call for pensioners to unite, saying, "More than 2 million pensioners are registered, and just as many are working informally. We do not accept this order of misery."

PENSIONERS' DEMANDS ON THE AGENDA

Among the demands voiced at the protest were raising the lowest pension to the level of a civil servant's salary, indexing holiday bonuses to the minimum wage, and amending the current pension law. Karagöz said, "Law No. 5510 must be repealed, and a new pension law must be prepared with the consensus of social stakeholders."

MESSAGE OF UNITY IN THE STRUGGLE

At the end of the meeting, Karagöz and union representatives invited all pensioners and workers to a joint struggle. Emphasizing the continuity of the struggle with the words, "We must meet either under a single roof or around a formula that will provide a union of forces. We must build a peaceful, united, and legitimate opposition by highlighting common denominators. We call on everyone to take responsibility so that it is not too late tomorrow," the importance of the movement was underscored.
