Pointing to Kahramanmaraş as an example: Prof. Dr. Naci Görür issues 'rubble' warning for Istanbul

Earth scientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür spoke at the Geology of Istanbul Symposium, held in memory of Prof. Dr. Aral Okay in partnership with Istanbul Kültür University, the TMMOB Chamber of Geological Engineers, and the IBB.

During the session titled "Istanbul and Earthquake," Görür drew attention to the urgent need for the establishment of a Ministry of Disaster and relevant legislation, risk analysis, micro-zoning studies, and urban management based on these, as part of the preliminary preparations for creating earthquake-resistant cities.

"I AM TALKING ABOUT A PILE OF RUBBLE THAT WOULD NOT EVEN FIT INTO THE SEA OF MARMARA"

Touching upon the February 6 earthquakes, Prof. Dr. Görür said:

"We saw that the debris rubble in the Southeast was dumped in a manner inconsistent with international standards. The asbestos, toxic, and chemical substances within the rubble mix with the soil through rain, and from there into the water, threatening public health for many years. Do we know what will be done with the rubble if a major earthquake hits Istanbul? I am talking about a pile of rubble that would not even fit into the Sea of Marmara. If the same path is followed, it will kill as many people by making them sick as those who lost their lives in the earthquake. If you do not handle the waste, an earthquake is the greatest environmental disaster."
