Police officer who caused the death of a 17-year-old in France to stand trial

According to information reported in the national press, the Nanterre Court has decided that police officer Florian M., who pulled the trigger during the incident, will be tried on charges of "voluntary homicide."
TO BE HEARD IN THE ASSIZE COURT IN 2026
If Florian M. does not appeal the decision, the case will be heard in the Hauts-de-Seine Assize Court in the second or third quarter of 2026. The suspect police officer had previously been arrested but was released under judicial supervision in November 2023.
Merzouk was killed by police gunfire on June 27, 2023, in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, while behind the wheel of a vehicle carrying three people. The incident sparked widespread outrage across France; thousands of people angry at police violence took to the streets, and protests in some cities turned into violent clashes.
PROSECUTORS HAD REQUESTED IT IN MARCH
The Nanterre Public Prosecutor's Office announced in March 2024 that it had requested that police officer Florian M. be tried on charges of voluntary homicide.
