Preparations for tiered natural gas tariffs: When will it be implemented?

Following recent adjustments to electricity tariffs, the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) has announced that a tiered tariff system will also be implemented for natural gas.

The EPDK had previously made a regulation change to the "Last Resort Supply Tariff" limits, requiring residences and workplaces consuming over 5 thousand kilowatt-hours of electricity annually to procure electricity at market prices without benefiting from state subsidies. According to a report by the Birgün newspaper, a similar system for natural gas is expected to be implemented with the start of the new year.

DIFFERENT CONSUMPTION CATEGORIES

Under the new regulation, it is stated that workplace and residential subscribers will be divided into specific categories based on the amount of natural gas they use throughout the month, and subscribers exceeding the annual consumption limit will be excluded from state support. With this application, the costs for subscribers with high natural gas consumption will be covered based on market prices.

'WE ARE WORKING ON AN INCOME-BASED BILLING MODEL'

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar stated in a September announcement that they were working on an income-based billing regulation for electricity and natural gas usage. Bayraktar had said, "It would be more accurate to offer a cost-based tariff to consumers who have a high income group and can bear the actual cost." The Ministry continues its preparations on a new model that reflects costs according to income levels within this scope.
