President Erdoğan warns of a legitimacy crisis: Values, principles, rules, and traditions are on the verge of losing their meaning and reputation

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made statements at the dinner held in honor of the 152nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly at Dolmabahçe Palace.

Highlights from Erdoğan's statements are as follows:

"I hope that the decisions to be taken, the discussions to be held, and the findings, criticisms, and proposals presented within the scope of the General Assembly, as well as the committee meetings, forum sessions, and side events to be conducted, will further strengthen the friendship and solidarity among us and contribute to the resolution of existing problems, especially the atrocities in Gaza. The Inter-Parliamentary Union has been fulfilling a very important function for exactly 137 years. I would like to thank you, the esteemed members of the Union, which is open to parliamentary democracy with an understanding of democracy for all, once again this evening. I find the mission undertaken by the Union on the basis of increasing opportunities for dialogue and cooperation and intensifying peace and justice-oriented initiatives to be very valuable.

THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM IS FACING A MAJOR LEGITIMACY CRISIS

I sincerely believe that the 152nd General Assembly will make significant contributions to the construction of a fairer and safer world and a future full of peace and hope, flourishing with new expectations on the ground of parliamentary diplomacy. Esteemed guests, as people of reason and conscience, we all know this fact very well: The international system established by the victors 80 years ago is facing a major legitimacy crisis today. The values, principles, rules, and traditions that form the foundation of the system are on the verge of losing their meaning and reputation on a global scale. Unfortunately, the binding provisions of international law have lost their influence over actors who add new ones to the war crimes and crimes against humanity they commit every day.

IT IS CLEAR THAT NO EQUATION WITHOUT REGIONAL COUNTRIES CAN RESPOND TO THE SEARCH FOR PEACE AND SECURITY

No one is safe in such an environment where common sense is suspended, dialogue mechanisms are disabled, and diplomacy and negotiation are replaced by weapons, missiles, and bombs. Look, I want to express this very clearly and plainly here. As Turkey, the priority of our foreign policy, which we have built on humanitarian values, is the peaceful resolution of conflicts, regardless of the geography. It is clear that no equation in which regional countries are not the main actors can respond to the search for peace and security. The essence of the peace initiatives we have undertaken in Gaza, Ukraine, Iran, Africa, and many other regions is a principled and realistic approach. Naturally, parliaments, which are the institutions where the will of nations is manifested, also have extremely critical responsibilities in this sense. Although the international public shows the will to stop the tragedies in the Middle East, we are witnessing that governments are lagging far behind at this point.

MORE THAN 1 MILLION LEBANESE DISPLACED

We have all followed what has happened in the last two months. While the world's focus shifted to the war in Iran, thousands of people lost their lives in the Israeli government's attacks in Palestine and Lebanon. In the same attacks, more than 1 million Lebanese were displaced. The number of those killed and forced to migrate is increasing."
