Prison sentences proposed for drunk drivers and reckless lane-changers

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Kırıkkale Deputy Halil Öztürk has submitted a legislative proposal to the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) to increase penalties for those who change lanes in a way that endangers traffic and those who drive under the influence of drugs.

According to a report in the Türkiye newspaper, known for its proximity to the government, individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be sentenced to one to two years in prison. If an accident is caused, the sentence cannot be suspended or converted into a fine. Individuals who put the lives, health, or property of others at risk by dangerously changing multiple lanes will be sentenced to up to two years in prison.

In the event of a traffic accident, the pronouncement of the verdict regarding the penalty to be imposed will not be deferred, and the prison sentence will not be converted into alternative sanctions or suspended. Furthermore, a fine of 500 thousand liras is proposed for those who put totaled vehicles back into traffic.
