Privacy regulation for daytime television: New legislative proposal in Parliament

MHP Kahramanmaraş MP Zuhal Karakoç has submitted a legislative proposal to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey aimed at protecting personal privacy in daytime television programs and news bulletins.

According to a report by Türkiye Gazetesi, Karakoç's proposal seeks to prevent the broadcasting of information regarding individuals' family lives, personal data, health status, and financial assets unless there is a clear public interest.

The proposal aims to prevent the use of personal information for ratings or entertainment purposes. Furthermore, it was emphasized that even if individuals provide consent for such broadcasts, it would not override the prohibition.

In the justification for her proposal, Karakoç provided the following assessment:

“Making the most sensitive aspects of personal and family life the subject of television programs leads to them being transformed into elements of entertainment and consumption. With this proposal, it is aimed to prevent the use of elements related to individuals' private lives, family lives, health information, economic and social status, and similar intimate areas for the purposes of ratings, exposure, or entertainment.”
