The scope of the regulation that allowed convicts in open prisons during the pandemic process to complete their remaining sentences outside under probation is being expanded.

If the amendment, which is expected to be added to the judicial package on the Parliament's agenda via a motion, is accepted, those who committed crimes before July 31, 2023, will also complete their remaining sentences outside under probation.

According to a report by the Türkiye newspaper, known for its proximity to the government, it is planned that those who committed crimes before July 31, 2023, but whose sentences have not yet been finalized, will also have this right. AKP sources state that if the parties reach a consensus during the Judicial Package to be discussed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), the motion could be accepted with a joint signature.

CRIME DATE WILL BE THE CRITERION

If the regulation comes into effect, those who committed crimes before July 31, 2023, will also complete their remaining sentences outside under probation. Convicts who have five years or less remaining until they are eligible for probation will be able to benefit from this practice.

In this context, provided that the crime was committed before July 31, 2023, those with five years or less remaining until their probation eligibility will serve their remaining time under probation. Only those whose sentences were finalized as of July 31, 2023, could benefit from the previous regulation.

AKP and Ministry of Justice sources state that the number of people who will benefit from the new regulation is not yet clear.
