Pro-government newspaper reports: Erdogan-Assad meeting could happen at any moment
Following a surprise meeting between Assad and Putin, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced that a summit between Erdogan and Assad was discussed. According to the pro-government newspaper Türkiye, capital sources stated that the meeting could take place at any moment, adding that Erdogan could meet with both Putin and Assad.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad held a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Following the surprise summit, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reported that the two leaders discussed a potential summit between AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Assad.
ERDOGAN MAY MEET WITH BOTH ASSAD AND PUTIN
Peskov also stated that no documents were signed following the negotiations. Capital sources indicated that the meeting could take place at any moment, noting that Erdogan could meet with both Putin and Assad.
3 MEETINGS IN THE LAST MONTH
According to a report in the pro-government newspaper Türkiye, it has been learned that the intelligence services of the two countries, which are managing the normalization process between Turkey and Syria, have held three critical meetings in the last month. Parallel to these developments, the special visit of Sergey Naryshkin, Director of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), to Ankara drew attention.
It was noted that Naryshkin held consultations with MIT Chief Ibrahim Kalin regarding the date and location of the Assad-Erdogan summit, and that the final touches were being put on this critical meeting.
COULD HAPPEN AT ANY MOMENT
While capital sources state that the meeting could take place at any moment, they indicated that the Erdogan-Putin meeting, which had been postponed for some time, and in parallel, the Erdogan-Assad meeting, could take place.
It was noted that Russian leader Putin could also be involved in this contact. While the option of Iraq for the meeting location was on the agenda in the early days, it is stated that Ankara is focusing on the Kesep Border Gate option on the Turkey-Syria border. It is commented that the process is moving quickly and that the two leaders will likely be photographed together by August at the latest.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In recent weeks, Erdogan had stated that Assad could be hosted in Turkey or that the meeting could be held in a third country. Iraq had also recommended that the meetings be held in its capital, Baghdad.
