Warning on 'magnitude' from Prof. Dr. Ercan: AFAD used to share earthquakes above 3.5
Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan issued warnings following a 4.1 magnitude earthquake in the Nurhak district of Kahramanmaraş yesterday evening and a 4.2 magnitude earthquake in Çorum during the night.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 occurred in the Nurhak district of Kahramanmaraş yesterday evening, followed by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake in Çorum during the night.
Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan issued a notable warning regarding the earthquakes.
Ercan stated the following:
"Small, non-destructive tremors around magnitude 4, like those seen today in Çorum and Nurhak, happen all the time. However, interpreting them as signs of an expected earthquake without looking at seismic behavior causes public anxiety. One should not report earthquakes unless they are greater than magnitude 5. Reporting them creates unease."
DECISION ON 3.5 AND ABOVE
The Republic of Turkey Ministry of Interior Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) only shares earthquakes above 3.5 on its earthquake page on X, with the warning: "Earthquake messages shared from this account contain preliminary solutions for earthquakes with M>=3.5."
Internet media in Turkey creates news reports based on AFAD's earthquake page.
