Proposal for fare hikes on rail systems in Istanbul on the agenda
TCDD Taşımacılık A.Ş. has applied to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council with a request for an increase of over 25 percent in passenger fares for Marmaray and certain metro lines. The decision on the hike will be finalized following a vote in the council.
TCDD Taşımacılık A.Ş., affiliated with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, has brought a request for a significant price adjustment on rail transport lines in Istanbul to the agenda. The proposal requests a 25.49 percent increase in passenger transport fares, in line with the revaluation rate, primarily for the Marmaray line, as well as the Gebze-Halkalı, Gayrettepe-Istanbul Airport-Halkalı Metro, and Sirkeci-Kazlıçeşme suburban lines.
This hike request closely concerns public transport users in Istanbul. If the proposal is approved by the IMM Council, the fare for the longest distance on Marmaray, in particular, will rise to 75 TL. The price adjustment will also affect ticket prices on other suburban and metro lines.
The fare hike proposal submitted to the Tariff Commission of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council was prepared by TCDD Taşımacılık A.Ş. The justification provided states that updating travel fares is necessary in accordance with the applied revaluation rates.
Whether the hike proposal will be accepted and when the increased tariffs will come into effect will be determined by the outcome of the evaluation to be held in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council in the coming days. Passengers and city residents are closely monitoring the impact of the potential price increase on their transportation budgets.
