Psychiatric patient sets fire to hospital room in Batman

The incident occurred around 03:00 on the 6th floor of a private hospital in Batman.

According to the information obtained, a psychiatric patient receiving treatment on the 6th floor of the hospital set his room on fire for an unknown reason. Hospital staff staying in the ward reported the situation to the teams after seeing the smoke. Upon the report, numerous police, fire, and 112 Emergency Service teams were dispatched to the scene.

Fire crews arriving at the scene extinguished the fire in a short time. Patients trapped in the hospital were rescued by firefighters and citizens.

Mustafa Yeşilırmak, a citizen who rescued newborn babies from the intensive care unit, said, “I was working in my office. While I was working, I went out to the balcony when I heard very loud noises from outside. Two young people were trying to open the hospital door. Smoke was rising from the top floor of the hospital. I rushed out and went to help. When we arrived, there was no one there; we made the first intervention. There were 13 newborn babies in the intensive care unit. I rescued a total of 2 baby infants from the smoke. I had a very hard time rescuing the babies from the smoke; the babies had IVs attached. I couldn't see in front of me because of the smoke, I rescued 2 babies with great difficulty.”

Patients hospitalized at the facility were transferred to Batman Training and Research Hospital. The psychiatric patient involved in the incident was taken into custody. The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
