Radical changes coming to the Teaching Profession Law

Significant changes to the requirements for becoming a teacher are planned under the Teaching Profession Law. According to the draft expected to be submitted to Parliament, candidates will be appointed only after completing training at an academy. The preparatory training for teacher candidates at the academy will last for four terms. Every candidate receiving training will undergo a security background check.

Radical changes coming to the Teaching Profession Law

The training and appointment processes for teacher candidates will be reorganized. The draft is expected to be submitted to the Speaker of Parliament in the coming days.

Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin, who made statements on the subject during a television program he attended, also stated that they consider it essential to carry out a 'revision' in the teacher training process.

According to the report by Ekonomim.Com, the draft law includes the following provisions:

• According to the draft Teaching Profession Law, candidates will be appointed after undergoing training at the academy.

• Training plans will also be made for current teachers. Inspectors will conduct audits in schools. Teachers found to be insufficient during these audits will be subjected to training at the academy.

• Those who are found insufficient in the second evaluation will be transferred to general administrative services.

• The duration of the preparatory training to be given to teacher candidates at the academy will be four terms.

• Every candidate receiving training will undergo a security background check.

• At least two written exams will be held for each theoretical course at the academy. The passing grade for courses has been set at 60 out of 100. Those who fail a course will be given one additional exam opportunity.

• Those who score below 60 in the additional exam will be dismissed from the academy.

• The extent to which candidates reflect the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the classroom environment will also be measured. Those who score below 70 in practical courses will be dismissed from the academy.

ABSENTEEISM RIGHTS

• Teachers will be granted 5 days of absenteeism rights for each term.

• If teacher candidates are absent for 20 days or more with a medical report, their enrollment will be frozen until the next term.

• Those who are absent for 6 days or more will be dismissed from the academy.

• Throughout their training at the academy, teacher candidates will be subject to disciplinary penalties just like students.

• Those who engage in illegal organization or political propaganda, participate in protests, attempt violence, or commit verbal or sexual harassment will be expelled from the academy.

VIOLENCE REGULATION

• With the regulation, penalties for violence against educators will be increased by half, and trial without arrest will be abolished.

• In addition, disciplinary penalties will be imposed on teachers who share images of students on social media without obtaining permission from their parents.

• The Teaching Profession Law is expected to be referred to Parliament shortly.
