Reaction to Israel's attack in Rafah: Those responsible must be held accountable

Another reaction to the attacks carried out by Israel in Rafah has come from the United Nations. Tor Wennesland, the United Nations (UN) Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, condemned the Israeli army's attack last night on a camp for displaced Palestinians in the city of Rafah and called for those responsible to be held accountable.

Wennesland made a statement on his X social media account regarding Israel's bombing of the camp for displaced Palestinians in Rafah last night.

Stating that the tents of displaced people were hit in Israel's attack in Rafah, Wennesland noted that he condemned the attack, in which more than 35 Palestinians, including women and children, lost their lives and dozens more were injured.

Wennesland stated, "I am deeply saddened by the death of so many women and children in an area where people were seeking shelter."

Calling on Israeli authorities to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the attack, Wennesland demanded that "immediate steps be taken to hold those responsible accountable and to better protect civilians."

WHAT HAPPENED

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the UN's judicial organ, ruled in its provisional measures decision on May 24 that Israel must immediately halt its attacks on Rafah, not obstruct humanitarian aid, and allow UN officials who will investigate its crimes to enter Gaza.

Israel carried out an attack on the tents of displaced Palestinians in the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, where the ICJ had ordered a halt to attacks, and it was announced that at least 40 Palestinians lost their lives in the attack.

Eyewitnesses said, "The Israeli army's bombardment caused many tents in the camp to collapse and burn. This camp is not located in the area that the Israeli army had ordered to be evacuated in the city of Rafah, where thousands of displaced Palestinians live."

Witnesses stated that Israeli warplanes attacked the camp with at least 8 rockets.
